River Trout

The photophobic river trout have very good eyesight and are diurnal and nocturnal. They feed mainly on insects, insect larvae and crustaceans. Cannibalism can occur too. From October to the end of November, they move into shallow water, where the females make spawning pits with their tailfins. Immediately after spawning, the male inseminates the eggs and covers them with gravel.

Environmental impact: Dam

In the Surselva, there is hardly no stream untapped. Many waters are dammed up and used for the production of electricity through turbine. During the power production, the water levels are subject to fluctuations (sunk and flush). The sunk and flush can be deleterious to macrozoobenthos, fry as well as to cottids and contributes to the decline of the fish population.

Environmental impact: residual water

Often, the Vorder Rhine carries only little residual water. Due to the low water level, the water heats up more and faster during hot summers. For the fish that depend on cold temperatures, the higher water temperature is becoming a huge problem. There is oxygen deficit, which can be fatal if this condition last for some time.
