Riverside forest
Riverside forests need a constant humidity and rely on natural fluvial dynamics. They are swamped on a regular basis and/or are influenced by the ground water. Alders and willows shape gallery forests, which are unable to be harmed by floods that last for weeks. You can study this very impressively in pasture at the resting spot «Schwarzes Loch».
Heather pine forest
The Heather pine forest thrives on the shallow, dry slopes of the Rhine gorge. It is uncommon in Switzerland and offers ideal habitats for rare orchids. In spring, the pale pink-flowered heather forms bright carpets on the hillsides of the canyon.
