National and international protected areas
With its ravishing beauty, the Rhine Gorge attracts many visitors every year. In order to check on the continuously rising pressure on the sensitive biosphere, parts of the canyon are under special protection.
Federal inventory of landscapes and natural monuments
In 1977, the Rhine Gorge was listed in the federal inventory of landscapes and natural monuments (BLN).
«The federal inventory of landscapes and natural monuments (BLN) defines the most valuable landscapes throughout Switzerland. It is a tool to save and protect the local overall appearance of the landscapes and villages, the historical sites as well as the natural and cultural monuments of the country and further to support their preservation and maintenance. » (NHG Art. 1 Bst. a)

Natural Forest Preserve
In natural forest preserves, there is no forestry or agricultural use at all. The unfolding of the forest is completely left to nature. No intervention is permitted with the exception of forest fires or phytosanitary emergencies, such as bark beetle infestation. In the Rhine Gorge, there are three different natural forest preserves.
Bird Sanctuaries
Several temporary bird sanctuaries were designated in the cantonal structure plan for protecting the breeding habitats of the sandpiper. From April 1 to July 15, these areas are hedged and regularly monitored by rangers. During this time, these areas are not accessible.
