The Rhine Gorge municipalities

Around the Rhine Gorge, nine quaint Grison municipalities are located. Pristine mountain villages, unique landscapes and a population that appreciates its precious nature. Not only the Rhine Gorge is worth a visit but also will you be captivated by the surrounding villages.

Bonaduz

The municipality of Bonaduz is located on a sunny terrace in the Rhine Valley of Chur, which is only intermitted north of the village trough the water channel of the Vorder Rhine. It is the only municipality that boards the Vorder- and Hinter Rhine and is located amidst this junction.

Flims

Among the holiday destinations in Grison, the municipality of Flims, situated at 1100 m above sea level and above the Vorder Rhine valley, is a sanitarium area of particular beauty. A huge, prehistoric rockslide created the preconditions for the Rhine Gorge.

Ilanz/Glion

More than 700 years ago, Ilanz/Glion was first mentioned as a village with municipal law: as the first town on the Rhine and as “a place surrounded by walls, where lots of people meet to live”. The walls have since been opened up and the town, together with the surrounding parties, forms the new municipality of Ilanz/Glion, “the gateway to the Rhine Gorge”.

Laax

The municipal area stretches from the Laaxer ravine up to the watershed between the Grisons and Glarus mountains and the impressive Vorab Glacier. The village includes Lag digl Oberst and lake Laax. Culture and culinary enthusiasts will get their money’s worth at the Ustria Lags and the arts- and leisure center CULARTA.

Schluein

The Romansh village of Schluein is located east of Ilanz in the Vorder Rhine valley, not far from the well-known holiday resort of Flims Laax Falera, at the very beginning of the Rhine Gorge. One of the most beautiful golf courses in Switzerland, the Buna Vista Golf Sagogn-Schluein, is situated close to nature on the plateau of the Rhine Gorge and offers a marvelous view of the Surselva alpine world.

Safiental

Less than 1000 residents live in the municipal area of 15,142 hectares. In the municipality of Safiental you will find a world of its own. On the one hand, there is the spectacular Rhine Gorge with its rugged rock walls and a beautiful river for canoeing or rafting trips. On the other hand, you will find an unimpaired cultural landscape and a vivid Walser culture in the municipality of Safiental.

Sagogn

Sagogn is located at 800 m above sea level above the ravines of the Vorder Rhine and is huddled against the hilly landscapes of Laax and Falera. Thanks to the benign climate, you can enjoy balmy summer evenings on the patios of Sagogn’s restaurants. The quiet location close to the tourist centers and yet away from through traffic is a hidden gem. In the pretty village the local language is Romansh.

Tamins

Tamins is located around 10 km west of Chur. Below the castle rock of the Reichenau district, the Vorder Rhine and Hinter Rhine join to form the Rhine. The Rhaetian Railway line from Chur splits west of Reichenau-Tamins station: one line runs via Thusis to the Engadin, the other via Disentis to Andermatt.
